What’s Behind the Spiraling Opioid Addiction Rates

by Emily Elefonte '17

On August 22, 2016, the Pekin Daily Times quoted Adelphi University Professor of Public Health, Phillip Alcabes, Ph.D., on the issue of spiraling opioid addiction rates. Dr. Alcabes’ article, “Medication Nation,” was referenced for the statistic that, “$9 billion is spent annually on the 200 million prescriptions filled for opiod pain relievers.”

Dr. Alcabes also commented, “that’s just a portion of the blizzard of prescriptions written each year.”
