Partnership and Outreach

We’re reaching out locally and globally with best-practice models.

Adelphi faculty and staff have appeared at local, national, and international meetings and conferences discussing autism and its related topics, particularly:

  • Dr. Stephen Shore
  • Dr. Valerie Karr
  • Dr. Judith Cohen
  • Mitch Nagler, M.A., L.M.H.C.

» Partnership with Westbrook Preparatory School

Westbrook Preparatory School opened in Westbury, New York, in March 2011 as the first state registered, residential program in New York State for adolescents on the spectrum with high-functioning autism and related conditions. Dr. Judith Cohen is a founding member, and Dr. Stephen Shore is on the advisory board and is a volunteer. The school is managed by SCO Family of Services and has the capacity for enrolling 24 students. We anticipate that there will be many opportunities for Adelphi students for employment, observation, internships, and volunteering at this new school, which is expected to become a “best practices model” in the field of autism programs.

» Partnership with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association

The Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association (AHA) is a not-for-profit organization located on Long Island and New York City serving a wide national area.  The mission of AHA is to provide information, education, support and advocacy to family members, individuals on the autism spectrum, the professionals who work on their behalf, and others affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder and related conditions.

Pat Schissel, Executive Director of the AHA, is an alumnus of Adelphi University and was an adjunct professor in the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education. Dr. Stephen Shore, coordinator of Adelphi’s Autism Task Force,  participates in AHA’s advisory board. The Association also holds its annual “Issues in Independent Living for Adolescents and Adults on the Autism Spectrum” spring conference at Adelphi’s Garden City campus and collaborates with the University on other programs.
